Business Continuity Plans for Small Businesses

Business continuity planning means developing effective strategies to deal with and recover from disruptive incidents. Besides reducing the risk of failure for your small business, continuity planning has other benefits. It identifies your weakest areas and recognizing weakness is the first step in establishing preventive measures to safeguard and maintain things that are important for the success of your business. Good contingency planning gets you up and running after a setback quickly and easily. Thus, business continuity planning saves you money by lowering costs and losses from a business disruption.

Business Continuity Plan

A small business does not need a large manual for its continuity plan. In fact, the best plans are kept concise and simple. A continuity plan should be a well-indexed, intuitive, easy reference for your company to follow in event of an emergency. Small businesses can get help setting up a business continuity plan with readily available handbooks, software guides, case studies and sample business continuity plans. Do not just settle with taking some prearranged plan. Customize your business continuity plan to make it useful to your company.

Setting Up

You will never be able to anticipate every possible situation, so the aim is to group problems by type. Identify the most likely risks and focus on what needs to be done, regardless of how it occurs. A problem is a problem and you need to know how to deal with it. A business continuity plan should help you prioritize. This will help you and your employees know where to look to find the necessary information to manage the crisis and recoup from it. As a result of your business continuity planning, your employees and clients will appreciate your leadership throughout any troublesome incidents.

Possible Problems

Business Continuity Planning should be a serious consideration for every company, regardless of size. You need to consider :

  • If you or someone else is dependent on your business for income or services
  • What could happen if your business was unexpectedly halted
  • How you would deal with power failures
  • How you would deal with equipment failure
  • How you would deal with a computer virus
  • How you would deal with a fire, tornado or hurricane
  • What could happen if your supplier has a crisis; how you will deal with a cut in your supply chain

It is important to recognize how much of an impact any number of major or minor crises could have on your small business. In the worst case scenario, you could lose the business you have worked hard to establish.
