Big Problems for Women Owners

Establishing a business is not an easy task. Anyone opening a business has to deal with soaring competition as more businesses open. Women have a lot to consider before starting a business due to typically chauvinistic ideas that dominate the business world. Ideas like ‘a woman’s place is in the home’ hinder many a businesswoman from achieving success. Highlighted are five problems women have to avoid falling into.

  1. The first problem faced by women in the small business world is confusing advertising with marketing. Marketing is the term applied to targeting your mail, advertisements, sign boards etc. You need to know your market area so you do not waste money on fruitless advertising. Knowing your target market enables you to focus your advertising.

  2. The second problem faced by women is time management. Female headed businesses often have this issue and it can be a cause of business failure. Women tend to shoulder the entire responsibility of the business rather than hiring staff so that the work is divided. In addition to the business responsibilities, women also bear the brunt of family responsibilities. The solution to this problem is to hire people to do the tasks that take the most time. This allows the business owner time to concentrate on the more important aspects of the business.

  3. Pricing and billing issues are problems for women in business. Women tend to quote a lower price fearing that they will lose a potential client if the price is too high. It is a good idea to talk to other women in the same business about the prices they have for their products. Women also tend to take a passive stance when clients have not paid past due bills. These follow up calls are important to the business’ finances.

  4. Networking is most important for any business to survive. Women’s skills in creating social contacts make networking important in the male dominated business world. As you do business you will meet people who will be potential customers, clients and partners. Being connected to potential contacts makes your life easier. The best way to start networking is by joining business organizations for women which help you to connect, develop business goals and focus your attention on success.
  5. Pleasing people is believed to be in a woman’s nature, so to keep customers happy women business owners will go beyond the call of duty. If you do not offer a particular service do not be afraid to turn down client’s request. Remember that you are the business owner and are free to choose what services you provide. Fulfilling projects or requests that are not on your service list will reduce the time you spend on the services you provide.
