Graphic Design Portfolio

A portfolio can be referred to as a file in which the samples of a persons work are stored. Similarly a graphic design portfolio is one in which a designer stores all his or her work and designs for the customer to see, so that when he visits a prospective employer, the employer can get an idea of the designer's work and what level of qualifications he has. This helps the designer a great deal as he does not have to create the designs when the customer goes to visit him. The designs are already ready and all the designer has to do is show them to the customer as soon as he comes in.

The graphic design portfolio of designer must contain some of the following things:

  • The designer's best piece of work.
  • A variety of designs such as logos, trademarks, wallpapers, backgrounds, web pages, etc.
  • The designs shown should not only be of the prevailing fashion, but should also include the designer's own personal tastes. This is because most customers need to see something different and they often seek out designers with different art.
  • The graphics design portfolio must contain a contact number and address of the designer especially if the portfolio is kept online.
  • The portfolio should be easy to go through and should not be designed in a complex manner for the client to understand.
  • All the designs in the portfolio should be neat, tidy and professional. This is because many a times the designs in the portfolio are good, but the way they are interpreted by the customer is in a negative manner.

The question that now needs to be asked is how does a portfolio actually help the designer?

The answer to this question is simple. When a customer comes to a designer he wants to see his designs and the way he works. This may include his style, taste, quality and neatness. After this the customer also needs to consider whether the designer is capable of making the sort of designs he wants or not. Another important thing to be considered is 'what can the designer produce'. This question arises because the customer may need a number of things designed such as wallpapers, logos, trademarks, backgrounds, browsers etc. Only after seeing the capability of the designer can the customer see whether the work shown to him is according to his taste or not. Basically the work should be according to the designer's taste and if the customer likes what the designer has to offer than he moves ahead with him.

An important thing to keep in mind is that a designer's portfolio must not be traditional in nature or contain any pieces of work that have been copied or plagiarized. In the case of an online portfolio, it is important that the designer keep his name and contact details in a visible place, so that if someone like his work they can get in touch with him immediately, via email or phone. Even if the graphic designer is an online designer, he should have a portfolio online. This is because an online portfolio is easy and convenient to access, day or night, any time of the week. Remember that even in an online portfolio, the work displayed should be professional and attractive. Avoid extremely complex designs as they only serve to confuse the prospective client.
