Home Based Business Leads: Marketing your Business

Marketing can make or break your home based business. It has been said a thousand times and it is true: the importance of marketing should never be underestimated. Whether you are just getting your business off the ground or ready to pump your business to the next level, effective marketing is essential. Your aim with marketing is not only to make a sale at the moment but to generate leads for future sales as well.

Getting Leads

Efficient marketing generates leads to prospective customers. Yet, many home based entrepreneurs are not sure where to direct their marketing efforts. As an entrepreneur you must first define your target market :

  • Who needs your products and services ?
  • Who is most likely to purchase your products and services ?
  • Who will be making decisions about the purchase of your product and services ?

Your marketing endeavors will be aimed at this target audience. Narrowing the focus of potential leads will greatly reduce your marketing costs, since you will be able to spend only where you are likely to have the most lucrative results. Useful leads put you in contact with people who already have an interest in your product. Your aim is to put together a portfolio of current leads. The top leads are those who contact you expressing an interest in learning more about what you have to offer.

For example, an excellent way to get new leads online is to offer free information in the form of articles, newsletters, or e-zines. It can be as simple as asking, “Want to read more? Sign up today... It’s FREE!” Then provide a brief form or survey to collect the contact information.

Using Your Leads

Once you have leads, your marketing focus switches to converting your leads into genuine customers. Every lead should be directed to where it is easy to commit to the sale at any step of the process. Online, you direct new leads to a capture page, where more information is immediately available about your home business products and services. Once you have an email address, you can program email auto responders to send prewritten messages on a fixed schedule. You should send a message immediately to recognize the new lead and make an offer. Then you can, for example, send a different message on the 3rd day, another on the 7th day, etc. You also add the new lead to your regular mailing list for updates and special offers.

Market Testing

Research marketing techniques and test various changes to your marketing strategies to see which tactics bring you the most leads. Customer feedback can also help recognize strengths and weaknesses in your marketing methods. Customers also then become leads for additional future sales. Customers can become sources of referrals for other new leads, either through your use of their testimonials or through their direct recommendation of your products. Ask your customers for help in finding new leads. The more good leads you get, the more successful your home based business will be.
