How to start a day care business?
In today’s society where both parents work outside the home and single parents are on the rise, the need for day care facilities is becoming a profitable industry to get into. In the United States today, over half of the children are cared for by someone other than a mother or father at least for a few hours per day. This is providing a growing consumer base for the day care industry.
First decide what type of day care business you would like to offer, for example:
- Full- day care
- After school care
- Night time care
- Evening care
- Senior care
Develop a sound business plan – make sure your business plan or proposal is organized, shows what you are willing to contribute to the start-up cost, shows a solid operating budget, and is well written with information that is factual. Many businesses fail each year due to poor planning.
Determine how you are going to finance your day care business – there are several sources to help with start-up costs, including savings, loans, grant programs, private sources, banks, venture capitalists, credit unions and government agencies.
Preparing for business operations - Choose a name for your business and legal structure such as sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation. You will also need to obtain proper insurance and license to operate your day care business.
Find a suitable location – aside from starting your day care business in your own home, you can also build, buy or rent space for your day care facility. Make sure the space is easily accessible, zoned for day care, provide adequate play area space, kitchen, has adequate bathroom facilities for both children and adults and is safe for young children.
Marketing and promoting your day care business – your day care business success or failure will depend on your marketing strategies. Get to know your customer base and cater your day care programs to meet their needs. Advertise at least 3 to 4 months prior to opening your day care business by passing out business cards, flyers, brochures, and advertise in the newspapers, phone book or magazines and networking.
Hire staff if necessary – advertise for employees. Your staff size will depend mainly on the amount of children you have in your day care and the types of programs you plan to provide.
Set up - purchase all the necessary equipments and educational materials you will need to get your day care business started. Also, make sure you have a curriculum and daily activity schedule.
Take the time to research the day care industry before you do anything. This is a rewarding and profitable business option and now more than ever is the right time to start your daycare business. And remember, if parents are pleased with your day care business, you will succeed.
