Franchising is given like a combo meal in a restaurant, take the package
as it comes. To start a franchise you have to pay a small amount of
money to the parent company and live by their standards and rules
as long as you operate under their name. The company will provide
some training before you start the business so that you can comply
with their standards.
Running a franchise is a preferable option to most career people than
continuing to work in their industry because they are tired of answering
to a boss. Starting a franchised business may sound simple but in
reality it is quite difficult. According to a research done by the
Indiana Franchise Research Center, most people do not do well in the
financially. The system of the franchising was rated above the average
or termed as excellent; however despite a good system the turn around
of the business has been low.
One thing to remember while conducting business under the umbrella
of a franchise is that you will have a manual dictating each of your
steps. This means that you have no way of being independent, enforcing
your own rules or running the business in you own way. That is the
way franchises work. According to studies, businesses that run under
a franchise have very role in deciding how their business is run.
This is more like working in any business under a boss, only in this
case if the business does not do well you shoulder the entire responsibility.
You will have to accommodate the franchisor in where to start the
business, following their rules, getting their training and selling
their products. If you want to have control over your business in
all aspects it may be a better idea to run a traditional small business
than a franchised one.
