Managing your Employees' Health: What are the basics?

There has been a considerable increase in the cost of medical health over the recent years. The cost of hospital services and various other chargers such as the doctor's fees are becoming increasingly expensive. Therefore, depending on the requirements, status of the employer, and the nature of the health insurance plans, there is a growing concern of the employers to provide his employees' with the necessary health coverage.

By right the employer of a business must bear the legal responsibilities of ensuring the health and safety issues of the worker's within his business. Basic Factors and issues to consider, when safeguarding the welfare of the workers or employees, employed in his business, include the duration and flexibility of working hours, the health hazards in the case of workers working in a factory or some pharmaceutical industry, dealing with hazardous chemicals. The employer must carry out thorough and effective health and safety assessments of his office premises to ensure that his employee's health is not at stake. Health hazards which jeopardize the health of the employee must not be overlooked. These could include faulty wiring and cabling, wet and slippery floors, insufficient ventilation, lack of heating and lighting facilities in the work area, faulty electrical equipment, and excessure work pressure.

The employer should come out with creative ideas to facilitate the improvement of the hazardous working conditions of his employees. In the case of factory workers, whose work involves toxic and lethal chemicals, the employer should provide them with the essential protective clothing and equipment to handle such a situation. Also he should decrease the amount of work- time, to be contributed by each employes within the industry. This could reduce the amount of time the worker has come in contact with the lethal chemical. To further enhance the life expectancy of the worker in the chemical industry, the employer could develop and carry out new training procedures and campaigns, to educate the workers on the dangers and risks involved in getting exposed to the chemicals.

In the case of an office environment, the employer should consider stationing various warning signs around the workspace. Various handbooks and manuals should be handed out to employees, if they are unsure about the operation of a particular kind of machinery such as a computer or printer for that matter. The employer should set up the smoking area in a spot which does not affect the other employees. The employer should also make an evalualion of its employees with disabilities, such as those with sight problems or physical disabilities( not being able to walk ), and inform them of the slippery and wet floors, broken glass windows, and the inappropriate wiring and cabling. In order to make them aware of the health dangers prevailing in their work space, the employer must issue out display signs, which display the information about the hazards.

The employer endowed with the tasks of introducing precautionary steps, to enhance the lifespan of his employees, must also take the initiative of carrying out effective safety evacuation drills and procedures. The issues to be covered in the drills, could range from one of the employees carrying out routine checks of the various alarms, such as the fire alarms to ensuring that the escape routes are free of obstruction, and the fire extinguishers are useable and in operational mode.
