Web Conferencing

Web conferencing is different from conventional methods of meeting wherein all participants are required to be at the same place to discuss and manage affairs. With information technology advancements and developments in field of web conferencing, businesses are getting an edge over other modes of conferencing like media-based (audio and video) conferencing. Necessary accessories are camera, microphone, speakers and teleconferencing software.

Types of Web Conferencing

Point-Point Video Conferencing - This type of conferencing is the most common type of web conferencing used worldwide. It uses individual IP (Internet Protocol, which is unique for every computer) addresses and bridges the connection for two different users located in different places.

Multi-point Conferencing - A central hub is used to connect all end users while looking for multi-point conferencing solutions.

Components

  • Slide presentations - This function is useful for designing and presenting multi-media slide presentations for a conference call, keeping in mind the target audience. It is best created through PowerPoint on Windows OS or Keynote on a Mac. A multi-media slide presentation helps the presenter to hold the conference in a more focused way. It is available with the pointers feature which helps participants to keep track of the discussion online.
  • VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) - VoIP is a real-time audio communication via computer with other accessories (like headphones and speakers). It also has recording and playback options for later reference by anyone using a unique web address.
  • Whiteboards - Whiteboard with annotation allows the presenter and participants to see the highlighted pointers and issues in a conference and help them to underline items on the slide presentation. It is simply used to make notes on a blank whiteboard. There is a feature where a user can also post comments for the discussion via threads and bulletin boards.
  • Chat rooms and live forums - Public chat rooms and live forums are used by participants for live question and answer sessions. These are helpful when a user is looking for expert advice and counseling. It is a good feature as it helps a user save time and money.
  • Polling and surveying - Polls and surveys allow the presenter to issue questions with multiple choice answers directed to the target audience to find the result of the survey and poll conducted.
  • Application sharing - Screen sharing and application sharing is where participants can view anything the presenter has shown on their screen.
  • Virtual libraries - Other main features of online web conferencing include online directories, special dialing options and address books. When searching for the ideal system, survey different companies and providers. This will enable you to compare their prices and packages.
