Types of Graphic Design Software

There are many various graphic design softwares available in the market today that are can either be used to create graphic designs or can used to view them. These graphics can be analyzed as:

  1. Raster graphics
  2. A raster graphics image or picture is a graphic which consists of generally very simple lines which combine to form an image.

  3. Vector graphics
  4. These are a combination of different tools such as lines, polygons and other geometric figures to represent an image.

There are a number of softwares that work either on raster or vector graphics, but there are a few softwares in the market now that combine both to provide a much better graphic. Most graphic programs also have the ability to export and import more than one program file.

There are also several graphic programs that support animation and graphic pictures such as Macromedia Flash Player and other programs. Vectors graphics can be further defined as a series of mathematical figures, while raster graphics can be defined as the film based animation which combines a lot of features to produce a moving film or animation.

Some of the popular raster graphics programs include:

  1. GIMP:
  2. This software GNU Image Manipulation Program or the GIMP is a bitmap raster editor, a program for running and creating raster graphics. It also supports vector based graphics to some extent. This software was developed in 1995 by Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis and is now maintained by a group of volunteers. It is licensed by the GNU public license.

  3. Paint Shop Pro:
  4. Paint Shop Pro is a bitmap graphic editor for people running Microsoft Windows operating systems. Published by the Minneapolis-based Jasc Software, Paint Shop Pro is very popular and useful for the web and graphic designers.

  5. Adobe Photoshop:
  6. Adobe Photoshop is a bitmap graphic editor published by Adobe Systems. It is the market leader of graphic design software in the field and has nearly monopolized the market. It is commonly known as Photoshop. As with most of Adobe's other applications, Photoshop is available for Mac OS and Microsoft Windows. Versions up to Photoshop CS 8.0 can also be run under operating systems such as Linux with an emulation program such as CrossOver Office.

The following are some popular vector graphic design softwares:

  1. Macromedia Flash Player:
  2. Macromedia Flash Player is a vector animation supporting program written and marketed by Macromedia that uses vector graphics. The files of this program are called Flash files and appear in a webpage to view animations in a web browser. To view these Flash files one must have a Flash player downloaded into his system.

  3. Adobe Live Motion:
  4. Adobe Live Motion is a creation by Adobe System which was introduced as a direct competitor to Macromedia's Flash player. Both these softwares are nearly the same.
